  • I’m all about honouring my cravings and intuitive eating. Our bodies tell us what we need — even if some of these foods are purely for our 💫 soul! 

The key to eating these foods? Prioritize quality over quantity! 

🍫 CHOCOLATE? Yes, please. I always purchase organic, fair-trade chocolate that’s 60% cocoa or higher. If you’re going to treat yourself (especially if it’s daily), be sure it’s worth it. Stir clear of low-quality candy bars that contain way too much sugar (I’m looking at you Cadbury + Nestle) and other unhealthy additives that can throw your gut harmony out of balance. 

Ok, am I the only one who can’t turn down a bag of dill pickle 🥔 CHIPS? Common, tell me I’m not alone! This one is 110% quality over quantity, so when I do pop open a bag of chips, I always make sure they’re non-GMO and contain zero artificial colours and flavours.

Is 🍝 PASTA your preferita meal? Cook up some durum wheat or sourdough pasta made with only 2 or 3 quality organic ingredients, or switch things up and opt for a quinoa or chickpea pasta for some extra protein. And ALWAYS add fibre-rich, gut-friendly vegetables and nuts to your clean ingredient (or homemade) pasta sauce.

Not gonna lie, I love a good 🥐 CROISSANT! But if I’m going to bite into a flaky bundle of buttery goodness, you can bet your cute tooshie it’s not going to be some crap from a chain grocery store or Starbucks. I’m looking for gold here, and it’s sooo worth the price to indulge in quality fresh BAKED GOODS made from real food (no preservatives to prolong shelf life). Your tastebuds and gut flora will thank you. 

Love 🥖 BREAD? Toast up on a slice or two of fermented sourdough made with whole grain, stone-milled, organic flour. The fermentation process that’s used to make true sourdough bread slows digestion and stabilizes your blood sugar (unlike yeasted bread).

  • 🍭 CANDY HACK! Ok, I totally understand that swapping healthy foods in place of Halloween candy is just not an option for most parents, especially if your children are out of the toddler stage. But I have an easy HACK to help keep your kiddos from bouncing off the wall all week!

Serve up plenty of blood sugar-regulating snacks BEFORE your kids dig into the candy bowl, like hummus with 🥕 veggie sticks, organic cheese, 🥚 hard-boiled eggs, a handful of nuts/seeds or a scoop of nut/seed butter -- think protein + fibre to avoid a glucose spike (aka. that thing that turns your kid into a little monster). This hack is great because it involves ADDING something into your kid's day instead of taking something away (ie. candy). 

So why is this important? Imbalanced blood sugar levels (when a child's blood sugar levels rise rapidly and then fall quickly) can have a big effect on your child's mood + behaviour, including irritability, difficulty concentrating, emotional instability, aggression, impulsivity, and eventually fatigue (the crash). Adding protein and fibre before sugar will help keep blood sugar levels steady.
