This recipe is addictive! If you haven’t made homemade jalapeño poppers, now is the time! You’ll never go back to pre-made frozen poppers EVER again.
Vegan Jalapeño Poppers
These dairy-free jalapeño poppers are quick and easy to whip up for any occasion — the big game, Friendsgiving, date night, a light lunch or pop them on top of a cozy bowl of chilli.
Healthy Jalapeño Poppers
One of the benefits of making jalapeño poppers from scratch is that you have complete control over the ingredients you use, no fillers, preservatives or mystery cheeses are lurking inside these tasty bites. These are also baked jalapeño poppers, which helps them keep their nutrition profile (extreme heat can kill off nutrients) and you skip the unhealthy oil used in the deep frying process.
How to make Vegan Jalapeño Poppers
These are the easiest jalapeño poppers to make. Just slice the jalapeños, remove the seeds (if desired), fill the jalapeños with cashew cheese, combine the spices with the Panko bread crumbs, top the peppers with the crumb/spice mixture, and bake. That’s it! So easy!
If you’re feeling extra fancy, you can drizzle your poppers with a Siracha aioli — the perfect game-day jalapeño popper trick to make it look like your a culinary master. 😉
Delicious + Nutritious
Ingredients to make Game-Day Vegan Jalapeño Poppers
Jalapeño — Did you know that peppers are three times higher in vitamin C than an orange?! They’re also an excellent source of vitamin A and a potent antioxidant. Not to mention they’re delicious.
Cashew Cheese — A good source of healthy fats, protein, fibre, magnesium, B6 and vitamin K, cashews aren’t only yummy, they’re nutritious too! Look for high-quality cashew cheese that doesn’t contain preservatives or unpronounceable ingredients, I like Zengerry Fauxmagerie or Spread’em Kitchen Co. In this recipe I used Zengarry’s Ale-aged Cheddar for the perfect game-day combo.
Panko Bead Crumbs — When baked, panko adds crunch and texture to these tasty poppers. I like to use gluten-free panko bread crumbs so everyone can enjoy them.
Spices — Chilli, garlic and onion powder add a nice flavour to the panko crumbs and complement the fresh jalapeños.
Game-Day Vegan Jalapeño Poppers
Ingredients
- 3 jalapeños Sliced in half length-wise
- 6 tbsp vegan cream cheese
Panko Topping
- 3 tbsp gluten-free panko bread crumbs
- 1 tsp chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1 Pinch of sea salt
- Fresh ground pepper to taste
Siracha Aioli *
- 1/4 cup vegan mayo I use Vegenaise
- 1/2 - 1 tsp siracha sauce or to taste
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- juice of half a lime
- 1 pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
- Cut the jalapeños in half lengthwise and remove the seeds with a small spoon.
- Fill the inside of each jalapeño with vegan cream cheese. Use approximately 1 tbsp per jalapeño (the exact amount will depend on the size of your jalapeño).
- Combine the topping ingredients in a small bowl and stir to combine.
- Using your hands, sprinkle a generous amount of the topping over each jalapeño and pat down into the cream cheese to make sure it sticks.
- Line the poppers up on a cookie sheet so there is space between each one. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. To get a really crisp topping, put your poppers under the broiler for a few seconds, but watch them close or they will burn!
- Cool slightly + serve warm.
